Best Debit & Credit Card accounts for Vancouver, BC
There are a number of different credit and debit card options. A lot of them are good, some are great, and some are not even worth considering.
Throughout my time in Vancouver, I have used a lot of different ones. Some of them I have paid for, while the majority of them were free.
I am not a huge fan of paid credit cards – unless there is a good reason for you to have one, a free (no annual plan) will do just fine.
The best part of a free account is that you can still get additional benefits. What benefits, you might ask? See below.
Best Debit Card Account (bank account) for Vancouver residents.
The best debit card account IMO by far: Simplii.
Simplii Financial is a division of CIBC – a trusted bank that has been around for many decades.
Why Simplii? Simple.
- Free chequing account
- Free high-interest savings account
- Free E-transfers
- Intuitive app and good customer service
I’ve been using Simplii as my main bank account for 5+ years, and I couldn’t be happier.
It’s easy to set up an automatic payment, send international transfers (no fees!), and customer service is excellent – low delays and quick response.
Best Credit Card for Vancouver
Even though Simplii also offers credit card accounts, I recommend going a different route: Tangerine.
- No annual fee
- Great cashback (2% on select categories, 0.5% on everything else)
- Easy web interface and intuitive app
- Easy to reach customer service and responsive fraud protection support
The cashback is a great bonus. The 2% is by far the best rate that I’ve seen yet on a no-fee card.
The way the cashback works: you can pick 2 categories yourself out of the following options:
Personally, I’ve picked Recurring Bill Payments (internet, cell phone, etc) and Entertainment (very broad coverage).
You can switch your categories once every 3 months. If the transaction has an incorrect category, you can change the assignment yourself.
Currently, I have a $10,000 credit card limit, which is pretty sweet – especially for travelling down to the US. Prior to becoming a citizen, they often asked at the border how much cash reserve I have, and this answer has always been sufficient.
